Indigo dyeing process is very different from any other process I followed before, since indigo is not water soluble.
After looking for different recipes I found this one, which I followed step by step and obtained these results using indigo at 5% w.o.f.
The lighter color took only a 20 seconds bath, the medium one two baths of 30 seconds each and the darkest one four baths of 30 seconds each (approximate times). You can obtain very dark colours doing more baths and you don't need to use a lot of dye.
In the pictures we can see, from left to right and from top to bottom: merino, alpaca and cotton yarn, silk fibers, merino felt, cotton fabric and silk gauze.
Indigo doesn't need mordants but these skeins were already mordanted with alum so maybe this influenced in the final color.
Remember skeins must be previously washed!

Teñido con Palo Campeche (Haematoxylum campechianum). Tercer intento.
After two failures with logwood I decided to make a third attempt and, although the dye is not perfect since it has some steins (due probably to a bad mordanting with alum), color is much more pretty and close to the blue shade logwood should give.
Proceso Process
We heat the water until it starts to steam. In a infuser we put the logwood (25% w.o.f. in this case). We heat it during 30 minutes and then we add the skeins previously soaked during 1 hour. We heat 30 minutes more and then we let stand 1 hour.
Last time it stood overnight and took an ugly brown shade.
I must say that while resting color became more blueish, while at the beginning it was more violetish.

Madder is a plant with yellow flowers and red stem and roots, from this part is where dye is extracted. For this dye bath I used 50% w.o.f.
¿Cómo preparar la planta?
How to prepare the plant?
I bought it already dry and choopped in little pieces. If you want to recolect it you must take into account that only plants older than 2 years old can be used. You must remove green parts and let it dry under the sun.

Madder was extensively used since Ancient Egypt to half the 19th century to dye fabrics. The red substance is called alizarin and it was also used as a pictoric pigment. In a pot we heat enough water with the madder during 30 minutes. Then we turn off and let it rest during 24 hours.
¿Cómo teñir?
How to dye?
We strain the water and leave apart the madder because we can use it again and obtain soft orange/pink colors. Then we add the dyed water to a large pot and the skeins (they have previously been soaked around 1 hour).
We heat it during 30 minutes at 70ºC, with more heat can appear ugly brown shades. We turn off the heat and let stand overnight. The next morning we only have to wash the skeins with mild soap and water and allow to dry.

Teñido con Palo Campeche, primer y segundo intento / Logwood dye, first and second attempt (Haematoxylum campechianum).
Logwood takes its name from the region it was brought from (Campeche, Mexico) to Europe in the 16th century. Maya people have been using it to dye clothes and blankets and since its arrival europeans did the same until the beginning of the 20th century, when synthetic dyes where invented.
Logwood bark gives a shade from violet to blue, depending on the pH of the dye bath. To get this color I used logwood 20% w.o.f.
I did a pair of attempts at dyeing (in the photo are mixed the skeins from both experiments). First at the regular way and second without heat. The blueish shades were obtained after an alkaline bath.
Beige and brown shades are not really beautiful although the blue ones are a little bit more attractive. Anyway I have to try a better recipe to get the prettiest colors possible.

Time ago I bought a bag with 100g of weld to experiment a little. Both weld flowers and leaves can be used and the color they give is a more or less intense yellow, depending on the proportion dye - fiber. In my case it was 50% w.o.f.
¿Cómo preparar la planta?
How to prepare the plant?
I bought it already dry and chopped in little pieces. If you want to recolect it you must do it at the end of spring or during summer, when their flowers grow. Weld has little yellow flowers and is oftenly found in dry and sandy areas.

We strain the water and throw away the weld if we don't want to use it again. Then we add the dyed water to a large pot (all we want to dye must fit inside) and heat it until it starts to boil. Then we add the skeins (they have previously been soaked around 1 hour) and cover them with water so that they have enough to move without problems and dye uniformely.
After 30 minutes we turn off the heat and let stand overnight. The next morning we only have to wash the skeins with mild soap and water and allow to dry.
We can use the dye bath again to give a second bath much less intense.

We start 2014 dyeing with a very common material in our kitchens, onion peels. I used the golden ones but you can also use the violet ones, I neved did it although. The color they give goes from golden yellow to brown, depending on the proportion dye - fiber. In my case I used a proportion 2:1, which means a lot of peels since they are extremely light.

Some weeks ago I ordered dyes and yarn and, among other stuff, I bought a little bag with 25g of cochineal dry insects. The colors it gives are amazingly bright, compared with other dyes I've used before, and, although this time I wanted a medium color, if you add more quantity you can get more deep and dark colors: red, purple, burgundy...
¿Cómo preparar la cochinilla?
How to prepare the cochineal?
Insects come already dry and ready to be used. Some people smash them but I chose not to do it because this way is easy to take them off the fibers after the dye bath. They are actually grey but become black / dark red in contact with water.

We heat water, half the quantity we are going to use at the end, and add the cochineal (5% weight of fiber). After 30 minutes we turn off, strain the water and leave apart.
We put again clean water in the pot, same quantity, and add the cochineal previously infused. After 30 minutes we turn off, strain the water and add it to the first extraction.
This way we extract the dye twice. Remember don't heat over 90ºC!
