Antes de teñir cualquier fibra con tintes naturales hay que lavar muy bien las madejas y someterlas a un proceso de mordentado.Yo suelo usar alumbre (potásico) y cremor tártaro juntos, ya que son los menos contaminante y no alteran los colores, como sí lo hace, por ejemplo, el hierro, que oscurece los tonos.
Before dyeing any fiber with natural dyes one must wash very well the skeins and mordant them. I normally use (potassium) alum and cream of tartar because they are the less contaminant and doesn't modify the final color as, for example, iron does darkening the shades.

Primero lavamos las madejas con agua templada y jabón natural, frotamos suavemente y dejamos en remojo 30 minutos. Después enjuagamos y dejamos en remojo en agua templada con un poco de vinagre durante 30min. El vinagre eliminará los restos de jabón. Finalmente enjuagamos, estrujamos suavemente y tendemos las madejas para que se sequen.
First we wash the skeins with warm water and natural soap, rub gently and then we soak them for 30 minutes. Later we rinse and soak the skeins with clean warm water and a little bit of vinegar, it will help to eliminate the soap remains. Finally we rinse again, squeeze and hang out the skeins.
Mordentado con alumbre
Mordanting with allum
Ponemos en remojo las madejas durante 30 minutos o 1 hora. En agua caliente al fuego, en un cazo pequeño, añadimos alumbre al 15% y cremor tártaro al 6%. Este tanto por ciento depende del peso de la fibra a mordentar. Por ejemplo para 50g de fibras usaremos 7,5g de alumbre y 3g de cremor tártaro.
En una olla grande con agua a unos 45ºC añadir la disolución de alumbre y cremor tártaro. Removemos y añadimos las madejas húmedas. Subimos la temperatura hasta 90º (que no hierva) y calentamos durante 30min.
Finalmente apagamos el fuego, dejamos enfriar el agua y sacamos las madejas. Antes de teñirlas debemos estrujarlas y lavarlas de nuevo como hicimos al principio para eliminar los restos de mordiente.
We soak the skeins during 30 to 60 minutes. In a little pot we heat water with allum 15% and cream of tartar 6%. This % depends on the weight of the fiber (w.o.f.). For example, to mordant 50g of fiber, we'll use 7,5g of allum and 3g of cream of tartar.
In a big pot with water at 45ºC we add the allum and cream of tartar solution. We stirr and add the skeins. We raise the temperature till 90ºC maximum and we heat during 30 minutes. Finally we turn off the heat, let the water cool down and we take out the skeins. Before dyeing we must wash them again as we did at the beginning to eliminate the mordant remains.
